As we climbed Mt Ngauruhoe, the late afternoon sky had us wondering what the night would be like?

My son Michael has always wanted to see the sunrise from the top of Mt Ngauruhoe.  As it takes over three hours to get to the top, we thought it a better idea to climb up in the afternoon and sleep the night on top of the mountain.  Now this scared several people when we told them what we wanted to do, it's an active volcanoe they said, but hang on there mate, it hasn't erupted for some time now, surely it won't, eventhough it's neighbour has several times in recent years.  We made it to the top as the sun was sinking, took our photos before having dinner and wine.  We were above the clouds, the moon came up and you could see quite clearly.   Although there was a bite in the air, it was absolutely awesome lieing in your sleeping bag out in the open, one meter away from a very deep creater, looking up at a crystal clear Milky Way and feeling on top of the world.

Midnight in the moonlight, with a cup of tea on top of Mt Ngauruhoe as the clouds appeared to lap at our feet.

Note the perfect cone shape of Mt Ngauruhoe as it casts it's  shadow on the early morning clouds.

Looking down on Mt Tongariro, with the rest of New Zealand hidden under the clouds.  The famous Tongariro crossing track comes in from the mid left and disapears off the photo in the middle/top. (My favourite North Island walk.)
