Milford Track, is probably the most famous walking track in New Zealand.  It starts from Lake Te Anau, goes up a old glazier valley, over the MacKinnin Pass and down to the Milford Sound.  It is one of the nicest tracks and is heavily booked.  To be sure you'll be able to walk it, you will need to book a year in advance.  You can freedom walk (ie carry your own food and sleeping gear) or book a tour where the food, hot showers and bedding is provided.  See the links below for costs and more information.  The track is 54km and is closed in winter and early spring.
